CHASING JAVA’S RHINOS : THE RAREST LARGE ANIMAL ON EARTH

Situated on Java’s westernmost point, the Ujung Kulon National Park is Indonesia’s premier reserve and one of the few remaining wilderness area on this densely populated island. Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java Regency (Banten) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last sanctuary of the endanger Javan Rhinoceros. Ujung Kulon was created to protect the Javan Rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros sondaicus), the rarest large mammal on the planet, with no more than 60 left in the wild and none in captivity. Yes, no zoo in the world has it! Javan Rhinoceros had almost been driven to extinction by poachers because the finely ground horns of these animals fetched enormous sums in some countries as aphrodisiacs. Javan rhinos are very shy and the sight is extremely rare.

The National Park is near Mount Anak Krakatoa volcano, an area of converging tectonic plates which often cause earthquakes and may lead to tsunamis. Located northwest of Ujung Kulon National Park, you also can find Peucang Island and Handeleum Island. It is one of the tourist resorts suitable for ecotourism and marine tourism activities, as well as adventure. Peucang Island is a small but very beautiful, unique and pleasant tropical island with a white sandy beach, blue coastal waters and enchanting coral reefs. One of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia. In this area there are also many other animals such as leopards, panthers, wild boar, Javan gibbons macaques, leaf monkeys, snakes, crocodiles, monitors lizards, deer and many species of birds, including the spectacular hornbill. It is also home to the ‘banteng’, wild aggressive cattle. Green turtles nests in some of the bays. Wondering how to live with nature? Come to Baduy Village, natural villages untouched by modernization. Here you are not allowed to use modern technology also cannot use any chemicals. In Banten, you also don’t want to miss an unspoiled and serene peninsula in some of the most beautiful beaches the island of Java has to offer, Tanjung Lesung and Sawarna Beach.
